Mageburn!
Mageburn is a fantasy Hack and Slash game inspired by Vampire Survivors, tabletop roleplaying games, and many games in the roguelite and time-survival genres.
There are two playable classes at the moment: Paladin and Ranger. You unlock new abilities at level 5 and level 10. Every level allows you to increase your HP, while every second level introduces an ability score upgrade alongside the HP boost.
Paladin's Attacks:
- Slash! - a basic sword swing. Does a decent amount of knockback and hits in an arc. Can be spammed.
- Cutting Wind! - a two-hit short range projectile attack. Each windslash does less damage and scales less than the standard slash attack, but is great for zoning.
- Faith Unleashed! - a longer-range fire projectile attack that expands over distance. Scales off of your strength as well as your intelligence.
Ranger's Attacks:
- Drawshot! - a basic bow & arrow shot. Doesn't do much damage, but can be fired off quickly in succession.
- Bouncing Quickshot! - a charged shot that bounces between enemies. The amount of enemies it bounces between before breaking scales off of your dexterity.
- Beartrap! - A trap that Ranger can place upon the ground. When an enemy walks over it, any enemies within a certain radius of the trap will be stuck in place for a couple of seconds. The stun-radius scales off of your wisdom.
Mageburn was created by a group of 5 in five weeks for the University of Portland's Computer Game Design class taught by Dr. Andy Nuxoll. The five of us are currently developing a 3D prototype game about that one experience that everyone has weirdly had when you were a kid when you had to play alone on the playground called Lonely Child Park Simulator - look out for that next month!
For those who want more like Mageburn: four of us are also working towards building a full-featured Zelda-like Action Adventure for our senior capstone project. The game, inspired by Celeste and Hyper Light Drifter, is based around the idea of highlighting the neurodivergent experience. The working title for this game is Project Diverge. Development has started on that - look out for more information coming in January-March 2025!
